Township police will supplement regular patrols with high-visibility patrols this Memorial Day weekend. Officers will be targeting all violators for aggressive-driving offenses, Operating Vehicle while Impaired-related violations and seat-belt usage.

The department’s efforts also are in partnership with state and local law-enforcement and highway-safety officials while taking part in the national “Click It or Ticket” seat-belt enforcement campaign through June 6. Funding for the additional patrols is provided by the Mahoning County OVI Task Force and the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio Traffic Safety Office.

Narcotics charges

cleveland

A federal grand jury in Cleveland returned a two-count indictment charging Daquann R. Hackett, 19, of Youngstown, with federal narcotics violations. The indictment charges Hackett with two separate and distinct acts of distributing more than 5 grams of crack cocaine in Youngstown.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert F. Corts and Daniel J. Riedl. The investigation was conducted by agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Youngstown, the Youngstown FBI office and Youngstown Police.

Don’t eat the fish

LINESVILLE, Pa.

The Pennsylvania departments of Environmental Protection and Health and the Fish and Boat Commission have issued a “do not eat” advisory for fish caught at Pymatuning State Park in northwestern Pennsylvania.

The warning was issued Thursday because the agencies say about 2,500 fish have died without explanation in the park’s reservoir since May 15. Park officials have said it doesn’t appear the fish kill is affecting the carp that have made the park’s Linesville Spillway a tourist attraction. The carp throng so thickly for bread tossed by visitors that ducks can walk on the fish.

Instead, hundreds of crappie, muskie, walleye and bass have died in other parts of the reservoir. Biologists are studying the dead fish for clues.

No sales-tax change

HARRISBURG

Gov. Ed Rendell acknowledged Thursday that his plan to reduce Pennsylvania’s sales tax and boost revenue by extending it to more goods and services is doomed — at least in this election year.

“It’s just very complex, and you’d be stepping on the toes of a lot of special interests. I don’t think there’s an appetite to do that this year,” the Democrat said at a Capitol news briefing. In his February budget address, Rendell advocated cutting the tax rate from 6 percent to 4 percent and extending it to dozens of things that are now exempt, including many professional services, home electric bills, candy, firewood and personal-hygiene products.
