Boardman girls track team wins districts
Neighbors | Submitted.The Boardman girls track team won the District championship the weekend of May 23. .For the past five years, the team has finished in second place.
For the past five years, the Boardman girls track and field team has finished as district runner-up and the last time they won a district title was in 2004.
Until now.
On May 23, Boardman scored 107 1/2 points to win the Division I district track title at Fitch High.
Two Spartans were district champions, six girls were district runners-up and the girls qualified 11 events to the regional meet.
Coach Denise Gorski was excited for the girls who will now advance one step closer to qualifying to the state meet.
“These girls who are advancing competed very hard and to qualify in 11 events is a tribute to their competitive desire,” said Gorski.
Senior Nicole Biagetti defended her district title from last year in the long jump by winning the event with a jump of 16-9 Ω.
Senior teammate Karlie Ligore won her first district title in the pole vault after clearing a height of 9-0. Senior Doriyon Glass was the district runner-up in the 100 and 200 with times of 12.50 and 26.55, respectively.
Glass teamed with Biagetti, junior Nicole Vlad and sophomore Lesley Koch to finish as the district runner-up in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 50.16. Their time of 49.55 in the semifinals was their best performance of the season.
Senior thrower Valerie Hood was the district runner-up for the second year in a row in the discus, throwing 141-1, her second-best throw of the season. She also finished as district runner-up in the shot put with a 40-3 º, her second-best throw of the season.
Junior Katie Heney was the district runner-up in the 3200 with a time of 11:53.59, her second-best run of the season.
Three events finished in third place. Sophomore Tori Moore ran a season-best time of 2:22.72 to advance to the regionals in the 800.
The 4x800 meter relay team ran 10:12.31, placing third. The team included senior Colleen Kratofil, Moore, Heney and sophomore Emily Bodamer.
The 4x200 meter relay team of Biagetti, Koch, freshman Lyndsay Olenych, and Glass placed third (1:46.7.)
“This meet is always full of emotional highs and lows,” said Gorski. “You feel so excited for those who advance to the regionals, but then you feel the disappointment for those who were so close but didn’t get out.”
