Babbaro named top male athlete at Villanova

Canfield High graduate and Villanova University football player Angelo Babbaro was named Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
The Villanova University Athletic Department announced the award at the Senior Student-Athlete Banquet May 13.
Babbaro earned Male Student-Athlete of the Year, while Nicole Schappert of track and field and cross country garnered the Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
Babbaro graduated from Villanova May 15 with a 3.6 GPA in economics.
A running back, Babbaro helped the Wildcats to the FCS National Championship in 2009 by tallying 69 carries for 442 yards and six touchdowns, 16 receptions for 185 yards and one touchdown and three kickoffs for 63 yards.
His best effort of the season came in the team’s 46-7 quarterfinal playoff win over New Hampshire when he rushed for a career-high 148 yards.
A three-time member of the CAA All-Academic Team, Babbaro is also a two-time District II All-Academic Team selection. Babbaro will return to Villanova for the 2010 season as a fifth-year senior.
The Senior Student-Athlete of the Year is given to the top male and female Villanova student-athlete who excel in athletics, academics and community service. The winner must have at least a 3.2 GPA, in addition to being a significant contributor to his or her team.
