In honor of CPR/AED Awareness Week, the American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter is offering hands-only CPR classes for those who are unable, untrained or unwilling to perform full CPR.
The courses will be offered June 1 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m., June 2 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., June 3 from 7:30 to 9 a.m., June 4 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., June 5 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., June 6 from 12:30 to 2 p.m., and June 7 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and again from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The course costs $11.
The chapter will also offer basic life support classes for a reduced fee of $55. The classes, designed for health-care workers, lifeguards, paramedics, first responders and firefighters, will take place June 1 and 3 from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the Red Cross training center, located at 8392 Tod Ave. The reduced cost is $55.
The Mahoning Red Cross will also offer an all-day safety training event from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 5. The course features hands-on training by a certified American Red Cross instructor and American Red Cross certification upon successful completion. The registration fee is $50.

Local Relay For Life events are still looking for community support and fundraising, according to the Northeast Ohio office of the American Cancer Society.
On June 4-5, the Austintown Relay for Life will take place at Austintown Fitch High School, the Relay for Life of East Liverpool will be at Frank Mangano Field and the Relay for Life of Cortland will be at Lakeview High School.
Lordstown and Newton Falls will host a joint Relay for Life on June 11-12 at Newton Falls High School.
The Springfield Relay for Life will be June 18-19 at Springfield High School.
Salem’s Relay for Life will be at Waterworth Memorial Park on June 25-26.
On July 9-10, Poland Seminary High School will host Poland’s Relay, and the Relay for Life of Columbiana will be at Crestview Football Stadium.

Wings for a cause

Buffalo Wild Wings in Northeast Ohio is participating in the Eat Wings Make A Difference Campaign to benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
For every wing sold in May, Buffalo Wild Wings will donate a penny to the American Cancer Society. The 23 participating locations in Northeast Ohio hope to sell 2.5 million wings, which would raise $25,000.
In the Mahoning Valley, the Buffalo Wild Wings locations in Youngstown, Austintown, Boardman and Niles are participating in the campaign,
Bass tournament

The 11th annual Muransky Companies Bass Classic, benefiting the United Way, will take place June 5 at Evans and Pine lakes.
The bass fishing tournament features professional bass anglers paired with amateurs who have made a donation to the United Way.
This year’s amateur anglers include Pittsburgh Steelers players Daniel Sepulveda, Brett Keisel and Jared Retkofsky.
A Kids’ Fish & Fun event will be in conjunction with the tournament from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Evans Lake. The free kids event is open to the public and will feature fishing along the shore, face painting, crafts and other activities.

Reading with Rover
ALLIANCE
The Alliance Community Hospital’s Community Care Center invites students from kindergarten through sixth grade to participate in its monthly reading program June 5 at 10:30 a.m.
Students rotate through four 10-minute reading stations, which each include a resident from the Community Care Center, a pet therapy dog and its dog handler.
The program is designed to give students the chance to read in a nonjudgemental environment, said Mary Todd, hospital volunteer coordinator.
Students should bring their own books. Parents and guardians are asked to remain at the facility while their child participates.
