Atty. Richard L. Burgess retired Friday as chief magistrate of the Mahoning County Probate Court.

A lifelong Youngstown resident who served five years in the Navy, Burgess received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in economics from Youngstown State University and his law degree from the University of Akron. Before becoming a lawyer, he was a market manager for Ohio Bell for 22 years.

He was in private law practice for seven years and spent 10 years as senior staff attorney with the 7th District Court of Appeals before joining the probate court in 2001.

Fire at Rulli’s

Fire in an oven caused about $20,000 damage to a South Avenue grocery store.

Firefighters were called about 4 p.m. Monday to Rulli Bros. A fire broke out in a bakery oven and was extinguished by the store’s sprinkler system. The store remains open.

Honorary bricks

MERCER, Pa.

The deadline for memorial or honorary brick submissions to be placed in spring 2010 at the Mercer County Courthouse Memorial and Honor Garden is Monday.

Orders will be accepted after that date, but placement may not take place until fall or later. The Memorial and Honor Gardens are located on the north side of the courthouse, on either side of the portico. Bricks are $53. Lakeview recount

WARREN

The automatic recount for the Lakeview school levy will be conducted at 9 a.m. next Wednesday at Trumbull County Board of Elections. After adding in absentee and provisional ballots starting last week, the 3.75-mill, five-year additional levy passed by two votes. The levy will raise $1,050,000 annually.

Pipe stolen

YOUNGSTOWN

A North Side man told police someone stole the copper pipes from his basement while he was out of his house Monday. The victim, who lives in the 2400 block of Trussit Avenue, said he left the house around 8 a.m. and returned about 9:30 p.m. to discover that all of the basement pipes were gone. Police said there was no sign of forced entry.
