Ohio paid about $6,000 in medical bills to treat a condemned man who tried to kill himself in prison nine days before his execution.

Records show that hospital and doctors’ bills in Youngstown for inmate Lawrence Reynolds cost the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction $6,078.

Records of bills released to The Associated Press on Tuesday include $790 for an ambulance, $1,105 for a stay in intensive care and $63 for a chest X-ray.

Reynolds was hospitalized March 8 after overdosing on pills he had stockpiled on death row, then was executed March 17 for strangling his neighbor in 1994.
