Cabbie says he got stiffed on Tenn.-to-Ohio fare

LORAIN, Ohio (AP) — A cab driver complains he got stiffed on a $1,400 fare for driving a couple more than 500 miles from Tennessee to Ohio.

Alan Coffey told police he picked up the man and woman in Jackson, Tenn., and told them he’d charge $1,427 to take them to an apartment in Lorain. Coffey says the woman claimed she had a family emergency.

Monday night, after the 10-hour trip, the couple said a relative would bring the money. Coffey says they all waited an hour and then the man and woman grabbed their stuff and ran off without paying.

Police say officers went to the apartment the couple asked to be taken to, and a woman there said one of the cab passengers was her niece but she didn’t know how to reach her.

No charges have been filed.
