Two people were injured in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 in Liberty Township on Tuesday evening, just over a mile from the site of a crash that killed three people Monday.
The latest accident involved a pickup truck towing a camping trailer that was heading eastbound between the Hubbard and Belmont Avenue exits.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the driver, Bryan Treible, 70, of Pierceton, Ind., lost control of the pickup when he changed lanes and the trailer began to sway. The trailer separated from the truck and the truck ran off the road, struck a guardrail and overturned down an embankment near the Monticello Apartments complex, police said. The trailer overturned alongside the highway.
Treible and his passenger, Dorothy Treible, 71, of Pierceton, were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Police were unsure of their relationship. Bryan Trieble suffered moderate injuries, and Dorothy Treible had severe injury to her right arm and other moderate injuries, police said. Both were listed in stable condition late Tuesday.
The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m., said OSHP Sgt. Bret Henderson. Traffic on I-80 was stopped between Belmont Avenue and the accident site so a medical evacuation helicopter and other emergency vehicles could arrive at the crash site. All lanes were reopened by 7 p.m.
Unlike Monday’s crash, the accident was not related to roadwork on 1-80 in Hubbard Township, about a mile east from Tuesday’s crash site, Henderson said.
Monday’s crash killed three people when a tractor-trailer failed to stop and slammed into a sport-utility vehicle as traffic was slowing down for the roadwork.
Shirley Gilmore, 66, of Warren, and two passengers — her brother David Westenfelder, 56, and their sister Wendy Frost, 59, both of Surprise, Ariz. — died in the accident.
Westenfelder and Frost were in town to attend Gilmore’s 50th wedding anniversary party, and she was driving them to the airport to return home when the crash occurred.
