Ohio mom asks court to take her baby off life support

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio mother who wants her infant daughter taken off life support is asking a judge to allow it now that a legal battle with the baby’s teenage father has ended.

An attorney for 18-year-old Deja Ruiz made the request in a filing Monday with Summit County Probate Court here.

Doctors say her daughter, 7-month-old Jada, is brain dead and has no chance of recovery after suffering from shaken baby syndrome in March.

Judge Bill Spicer has yet to set a hearing date.

Prosecutors say the baby’s injuries were caused by the father, 17-year-old John Jones of Akron. Jones had tried to block Ruiz from removing the infant from life support but gave up last week.

Jones denies shaking the baby. He’s in juvenile detention.
