Drainage upgrades

COLUMBUS

The state Controlling Board released $855,000 Monday for drainage improvements at the Ohio State Penitentiary on State Route 616 in Youngstown.

Original drains along the facility’s perimeter roads, fences and parking lots are failing, causing large amounts of standing water on the grounds.

According to documents, “The standing water is causing structural deterioration of the roads, parking lots and grounds. The excess water is also causing structural damage to the concrete that supports the perimeter fence, weakening its structural integrity.”

Miller Yount Paving of Cortland is handling the work.

Beginning at 6:30 a.m. today, traffic merging onto the Madison Avenue Expressway/U.S. Route 422 eastbound from Interstate 680 may experience brief periods of stopped traffic due to pavement work. The work is expected to last until 9 a.m. Motorists are urged to exercise caution while merging.

The work is part of a $10.6 million project to replace guardrail and resurface Route 422 from state Route 193 to Belmont Avenue and on Route 193 from Crescent Street to Route 422.

The project also includes the rehabilitation of four bridges: Route 193 over Crescent, Route 193 over Rayen Avenue and the railroad and the two bridges at the Route 193/Route 422 interchange.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed in August 2011.

Someone took more than $1,200 and a bulldog puppy valued at $4,000 from a Market Street pet store, employees told police.

Police were called about 8 a.m. Saturday to Harbor Pet Center on a breaking and entering report.

An employee told officers that the store was secured about 10 p.m. Friday and when employees arrived at 8 a.m. Saturday, they found a store safe open and on the floor, the roof hatch open and an alarm on the back door broken.

Cash drawers at the store’s front, which are emptied before the store closes, weren’t touched, a police report said.

A locked office door was damaged and drawers inside of the office were ransacked.
