HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa.

A Philadelphia-area man convicted of opening fire on three western Pennsylvania officers has been sentenced to 35 to 71 years in prison.

Blair County Judge Daniel Milliron said Friday that 38-year-old John Ray had shown no remorse after nearly killing one officer and shooting at two others in Altoona in November 2008. The former West Chester resident was convicted of attempted homicide of one officer and aggravated assault against two others as well as firearms and other counts.

Blair County District Attorney Richard Consiglio sought an even longer sentence.

Defense attorneys tried to convince jurors during the March trial that the traffic stop was racially motivated, but prosecutors said the officers checked the car only to see if someone needed help.
