Lakeview boys win Div. II district track


ANDOVER

Lakeview senior Andrew Gardner won the 400-meter dash and ran on the winning 4x200 and 4x400 relays to help the Bulldogs cruise to the boys district title at Saturday’s Division II meet at Pymatuning Valley High School.

The Bulldogs had 130 points. Mantua Crestwood was second with 72 and Southeast third with 66.

Daniel Marhulik also ran on the two winning relays, while Elliott Metheny and Louie Novakovich were on the 4x200 relay and Aaron Jesse and Albert Brannon ran on the 4x400 relay.

Niles junior Reginald Wells won the 100 and joined Dillon Palmer, Justin Miller and Chris Brown on the winning 4x100 relay.

Other area winners were LaBrae senior Steve Woodyard (shot put), Newton Falls sophomore Ryan Buchanan (high jump) and Southeast juniors Ravonne Lawrence (300 hurdles) and Damian Pennington (200).

On the girls side, Lakeview sophomore Lauren Schattinger won the 100, 200 and 400 and helped the Bulldogs finish third in the 4x400 relay. The top four in each event advance to Thursday’s regional meet at Ravenna Stadium.

Lakeview finished an area-best fourth in the girls standings with 63 points. Geneva won the meet with 1251/4 points, followed by Mentor Lake Catholic (95) and Crestwood (66).

District baseball

AKRON

John Gora pitched a one-hitter over six innings with nine strikeouts and six walks to lead the Western Reserve High baseball team to an 11-1 victory over Rittman in a Division IV district final at Summit Lake Park.

Chris Kalbfell had two hits and scored three runs for Reserve (18-8), which will meet Cuyahoga Heights in Thursday’s regional semifinal at 2 p.m. at the Lorain Pipeyard. Gora added two hits and scored twice.
