It was an overcast, chilly and windy day May 8, as the Austintown Lions Club sponsored its 15th annual 5K run on the streets surrounding the Christy National Guard Armory on Victoria Road.

There were 126 runners for the event. Lion Larry Jensen has served as race director for all 15 years.

Finish line was provided by the Youngstown Road Runners Club. The Fred Perry Motorcycle Benefit Run was the key sponsor for the event.

A highlight of the race was the completion by 84-year-old” Rev. Arthur Joachim of Canfield. Christopher Nasternick of Poland won the kids’ run.

The overall winner of the 5K was Justin Patterson of Austintown with a time of 17:36. Coming in second was Jonathan Bolha of Austintown with a time of 17:38. Finishing third was Patrick Ferguson of Austintown with a time of 18:19.

Pamela Byers from Warren won the Masters category (age 40+) with a time of 24:33.

For the ladies, it was Austintown’s Sarah Guerrier winning the race with a time of 21:18. Following in second place was Wilma DePiore with a time of 21:39. Amanda McNinch from Poland was third (21:50.)

There were special awards to the first three overall men and women finishers, special awards to top the three men and women finishers in Masters class and awards to the top three finishers in each age group.

Finishers of the kids’ run received a special award. Six-year-old Garrett Geiger got a special award for completing the whole 5K. Many door prizes were also given out.

All of the proceeds from the event benefit future Austintown Lions Club projects.
