Memorial Day parade, services scheduled

WASHINGTONVILLE

The annual Memorial Day commemoration for the Washingtonville and Leetonia area will be May 31.

A “Toast at the Post” will be at 9 a.m. at the Washingtonville VFW followed by the parade that will leave the Washingtonville Pharmacy at 10 a.m. and end at the VFW Veterans Memorial, where services will take place.

The Leetonia High School marching band will participate.

Korean War veterans will be honored during the program. Any Korean veterans who would like to participate should register at the post by 9:30 a.m. Membership in the VFW is not required.

Roger Frye, of Mogadore, a Marine Vietnam veteran who served as VFW state commander from 2007 to 2008, will be the guest speaker.

After the Washingtonville commemoration, a wreath-laying ceremony will be at Oakdale Cemetery in Leetonia at the grave site of Ralph E. Dias, a recipient of the Medal of Honor.

The activities are sponsored by York Drexler Post 5532, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Washingtonville, and Joe Williams Post 131, American Legion, Leetonia. Luncheons will be served at both locations after the program.
