Falcons fall to Cardinals
The Canfield girls softball team defeated Austintown 6-2 May 14.
Canfield had six runs, nine hits and four errors, while Fitch had two runs, five hits and one error.
For Fitch, Amanda Callahan (11-8) pitched the entire game with Carly Ortz catching.
Carlee Hart (11-8) pitched 4 1/3 innings for Canfield and Sarah Vrabel (3-1) got the save by tossing the final 2 2/3. Leading hitter for Fitch was Stephanie Berdis, who was 2-for-4 with a double.
For Canfield, Melanie West went 2-for-3 with a two RBI-double in the fifth. Vrabel had the other RBI in the fifth.
In the sixth inning, Kayley Keller led off with a single followed by bunts by Gina Mancini and Rebecca Brown to load the bases. Freshman Abby Baker drove in all three runners with a triple to finish the scoring run by Canfield.
Register for Gus Macker basketball tournament
Registration is now open for the Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament July 31 through Aug. 1 at the Covelli Centre.
The tournament is open to male and female youth and adults of all ages, sizes and abilities. Teams are computer-matched into competitive divisions according to the age, height and playing experience of all players on each roster to ensure fair competition.
Teams may register online at www.macker.com by July 12 or call 330-406-1424 to request a mail-in application, which must be postmarked by July 9.
The four-person team entry fee is $124. Proceeds support Youngstown Christian School, with a portion benefiting local military members.
