The Canfield Drop and Go, held Saturday at Old North Church, offered residents the chance to get rid of unwanted, but usable, household items and help others at the same time.

The event was sponsored by the Canfield Rotary, Canfield Township, YSU re:CREATE and the Mahoning County Commissioners’ Green Team.

The event provided a one-stop donation site with easy drop-off. Volunteers from the Juvenile Justice Center were on hand to unload the donated items from the cars.

“The goal of the Canfield Drop and Go is to keep usable items out of landfills. This helps the environment and saves landfill space. It also saves natural resources, as the items are already in existence and don’t need to be made again, which reduces pollution,” said Sarah Ellis, manager of YSU re:CREATE.

“The event also helps the Mahoning Valley Rescue Mission and Goodwill help the community.”

The Mahoning Valley Rescue Mission and Goodwill accepted the donations to help community members in need. Items donated included clothing, shoes, baby items, blankets, kitchen items and knick knacks.

Lynn Wood, Canfield Township recycling coordinator, and Peg Flynn, environmental educator with the Green Team, were also at the event.

The Green Team offers curbside recycling in Canfield. All recyclable items will be accepted except cardboard. Residents may request up to three bins and recyclables are collected every other week. For more information, call 330-740-2060.

Recycling sites in Canfield include Messerly Road, McCune Park and Mill Creek Metro Parks Farm. Recyclables taken at these sites include plastic bottles, aluminum and metal cans, paper, newspapers, publications and cardboard.

All Goodwill sites in all counties also now accept any computer components, including keyboards, hard drives and monitors. The organization then packs up the working or nonworking equipment and ships it to Dell Computers where the company dismantles the parts and recycles them.

YSU re:CREATE is a year-round program that will arrange for donations at any time. For more information on donating household items, call Ellis at 330-941-2238.
