Division II track day one, Poland and Mooney boys tied for second

Poland High is in second place for the boys, and in fourth for the girls after one day and several events of the Division II track and field district championships.

Cardinal Mooney boys are tied with the Bulldogs for second place with 16 points.

Three events were scored for the girls, and four for the boys. The finals for the other events will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. for field events, and an hour later for all running events.

The boys were scored in the 4x800-meter relay, which was the only running final, and the discus, long jump and pole vault. The girls were scored in the same relay, as well as the high jump and shot put.

The top four times or distances will advance to the regional meet.

The Poland boys relay team consisting of Kevin Krumpak, Kyle Felicky, Matt Gleydura and Sean Murphy captured first place and 10 points. They were followed by relays from West Branch, Salem and Struthers.

The Salem girls relay team of Betsy Yuhaniak, Lexi Shivers, Katherine Stiff and Bethany Huston was the only area team to finish in the top four of the event.

Allison Rice of Poland won the shot put with a toss of 35-10.25, besting Ursuline’s Courtney Powell (35-4.25).

Girard’s Landon Smith earned second place in the long jump, while Poland’s Nick Hvliak placed second, and Mooney’s Rick Williams third. Their jumps were 21-4 and 20-0.5 and 19-1.5, respectively.

Katelyn Ardale of Struthers won the high jump event, clearing 5-foot.

Four area athletes claimed the top spot in the boys discus toss, led by Keary Iarussi of Struthers (153-1). Eric Vendemia of Mooney, Anthony Shivers of Salem and Jeff Hill of Hubbard followed.
