Canfield musicians end year on a good note

Neighbors | Submitted.The Canfield High School symphonic band received two "Superior" ratings and two "Excellent" ratings at the Ohio Music Education Association State Band and Choir Large Group Adjudicated Event Apr. 23.

The Canfield High School Music Department continued its tradition of excellence by receiving four overall “Superior” ratings at the Ohio Music Education Association State Band and Choir Large Group Adjudicated Event Apr. 23.

The Chamber Choir, Class A, and One Octave Higher Ensemble, Class B, under the direction of Kelly Scurich, each received straight “Superior” ratings for their performances at Highland High School in Medina, Ohio.

Under the baton of Michael Kelly, the Concert Band, Class C received straight “Superior” ratings, while the Symphonic Band, Class A, received two “Superior” ratings and two “Excellent” ratings.

The bands performed at North Royalton High School in North Royalton, Ohio.

the bands and choirs qualified for state competition by receiving “Superior” ratings at District March 12. The OMEA Large Group Adjudicated Event (District and State) is performance-based event in which bands and choirs enter in a classification based on skill level.

The classifications are Class D (least difficult), Class C, Class B, Class A, and Class AA (most difficult, college level). Each group performs three prepared selections of music for a panel of three adjudicators and one selection they have never seen before for one adjudicator. They are awarded a rating from “V” (very poor) to “I” (superior).

Canfield High School was the only high school in OMEA District 5, which includes Ashtabula, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, to have two bands and two choirs receive “Superior” ratings both at the district and state levels.
