Boardman girls finish third in Federal League


The Boardman track and field team traveled to Lake High School for the Federal League Championship meet May 14.

Going into the meet, Boardman was in third place with two losses for the season. Jackson was in fourth with three losses during the regular season. The Spartans needed to finish above Jackson in the championship meet to finish third by themselves overall in the league.

But the Spartans fell short by just 1.5 points as Jackson finished fourth in the meet with 81.5 points and Boardman placed fifth with 80 points.

Boardman and Jackson finished the league tied for third place overall.

North Canton Hoover won the league and meet out right with 148 points. GlenOak scored 116 points and finishes in second. Fitch placed third in the league meet with 83 points, but finished fourth overall in the league.

Head Coach Denise Gorski was happy with her team’s performance and place in the league.

“We were picked to finish fourth or fifth in the coaches poll so this team exceeded expectations by placing third overall,” she said.

Junior Nicole Vlad placed third in the 100 high hurdles running 16.3 and earned Federal League Honorable Mention honors.

The 4x200 meter relay team ran a season-best time of 1:45.97 to earn second team Federal League honors. The team consisted of seniors Nicole Biagetti and Doriyon Glass, sophomore Lesley Koch, and freshman Lindsay Olenych.

Vlad came back later in the meet to earn another Federal League Honorable Mention honors as she placed third in the 300 meter hurdles (48.84).

Glass earned second team Federal League honors with her second-place finish in the 200 (26.24).

In the field events, senior Valerie Hood earned second team Federal League honors by placing second in the shot (39-8) and discus (136-1).

Biagetti earned second team Federal League honors with her runner-up finish in the long jump (16-7).

The team will compete in districts today, in hopes of qualifying for regionals next week and state in two weeks.
