“Creating a Church Health Ministry,” sponsored by the Trumbull County Health Department, is Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the YWCA, 375 North Park Ave.

The program addresses step-by-step strategies, resources and tools needed to start or enhance a Church Health Ministry.

The cost is $5.

Gold Team title

WARREN

An American Cancer Society Relay for Life team of employees from the Ireland Cancer Center at Trumbull Memorial Hospital raised $6,750 and earned the Gold Team title at the Warren Relay For Life on May 7 and 8.

The event raised $370,000 overall to support cancer research, education and advocacy and services for cancer patients and their families.

The Ireland Cancer Center Team also took first-place ribbons in several contest categories during the relay. They are: Best Midnight Hearty Snack, Best Educational Message in a Health Care Field, Opening Lap in a Health Care Field, Best Decorated Campsite in a Health Care Field and Best Banner in a Health Care Field; and received first-place Overall Relay awards for Luminaria’s Sold, Best Educational Message and Best Decorated Campsite. The team also won several second-place contest ribbons, including Overall Relay Plaque for Pack the Track.

The team captain was Luana Andamasaris, and Tammy Wibert was co-captain.

Weight-loss challenge

YOUNGSTOWN

NBC’s television show “The Biggest Loser” is presenting the Pound for Pound Challenge, a campaign that encourages people in the Mahoning Valley and across the country to lose weight and help feed hungry families in their local community.

Residents can join the Pound for Pound Challenge and help feed hungry families in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties by logging on to www.PFPChallenge.com and pledging weight-loss goals. For every pound pledged, the Pound for Pound Challenge donates 14 cents to Feeding America.

All pounds pledged in the Mahoning Valley will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank, a member food bank of Feeding America.

Taking applications

EAST LIVERPOOL

Community Action of Columbiana County is taking applications for the Senior Farmers Market program, which helps older adults eat locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables.

This is the second year for the Senior Farmers Market, which brings $30,000 in federal money to participating Columbiana County farmers.

Eight area farm markets will participate this growing season at locations throughout the county.

Columbiana County residents 60 and over can call Community Action of Columbiana County to apply for the program, which is based on income. Eligible seniors are given 10 coupons worth $10 each to be used at local farm markets to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey.

The program is sponsored by the Ohio Department of Aging and the USDA and Area Agencies on Aging.

Scholarships available

CLEVELAND

The Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern Ohio Chapter, has need-based scholarship funds available for several summer programs geared to children with any form of juvenile arthritis.

Camperships are available for Camp Wekandu, a weeklong summer camp near Cincinnati for children and teens who have juvenile arthritis or a joint-related illness, and who have completed first grade through high school. The camp is July 25-30.

Scholarships are also available for individuals and families to attend the Arthritis Foundation’s national Juvenile Arthritis Conference from July 29-Aug. 1 in Philadelphia.

Priority will be given to requests from children and families attending either summer program for the first time.

Support program

The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, is seeking individuals in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia disorder and their family members to attend an educational and support program, “Families in Transition.”

The purpose of the program is to educate people with memory loss and their families about Alzheimer’s disease, help people with memory loss learn how to live more positively with the disease, and help families learn how to cope with caregiving roles.

All services relating to this program are provided free of charge.

A brief interview is needed prior to participation in this program.
