McDonald’s indoor pool to be closed to cut costs

The McDonald school board has approved closing the high school’s indoor pool until further notice, at an anticipated annual savings of $54,000.
The pool is customarily used by the Royal Swan Club, which is a synchronized swimming club, and for village summer swim programs, including youth swim lessons and a summer exercise class for adults with arthritis or similar ailments.
The cross-country team also occasionally uses the pool.
At its meeting Monday, the board also rescinded a motion from March 15 to employ Pam Ruby as Swim Club adviser for the 2010-11 school year.
The board also has re- advertised for candidates for a part-time superintendent.
A new, five-year financial forecast from Treasurer Brian Stidham shows the district will end the 2010 fiscal year with a $109,000 balance.
Stidham explained the district is in the black only because of the passage of a new, 4.9-mill, five-year emergency levy, which generated $130,000 this year, and because of a $2 million state loan.
The levy will generate $260,000 a year when a full year of its proceeds are collected.
A deficit of $332,000 is projected for fiscal year 2011, which begins July 1. For fiscal year 2014, a deficit of $898,000 is projected.
In other business, the board also accepted a donation of $455 from Robert Reizan, Deluxe Transportation, McDonald, to defray the transportation costs for field trips.
