1935: British Army officer T.E. Lawrence, also known as “Lawrence of Arabia,” dies in Dorset, England, six days after being injured in a motorcycle crash.

1962: During a Democratic fundraiser at New York’s Madison Square Garden, actress Marilyn Monroe sings “Happy Birthday to You” to guest-of-honor President John F. Kennedy.

1967: The Soviet Union ratifies a treaty with the United States and Britain banning nuclear weapons from outer space.

1992: The 27th Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibits Congress from giving itself pay raises until the next congressional term, goes into effect.

1985: Contending that Mahoning County Democrats are crying out for change, Youngstown lawmaker George M. McKelvey says he will seek the post of party chairman at next spring’s reorganization meeting. Don L. Hanni Jr. has said he will not seek re-election.

Youngstown Mayor Patrick J. Ungaro is inviting officials from Mahoning and Trumbull counties to discuss common problems and economic development strategies in a meeting at a site to be determined.

1970: All customers of the Youngstown Water Department will be paying up to 76 percent more for their water effective immediately, Mayor Jack C. Hunter announces.

The Ohio State University reopens to 45,000 students following a 12-day shutdown after the shootings at Kent State University.

Mike Boano, president of the Youngstown Fraternal Association of Steel Haulers, says the Youngstown organization is splitting from the national organization and Pittsburgh and plans to go back to work if Local 377 Teamsters agree.

1960: City council backs downtown merchants in planning to retain city property adjacent to the downtown fire station for public parking, as opposed to Mayor Frank R. Franko’s proposal to convert it to free parking for city employees.

The Ohio Supreme Court orders Mahoning County commissioners to pay for an investigator for Coroner Dr. David A. Belinky.

A 23-acre wooded wonderland in the Harrison School district on the East Side is saved from a developer’s bulldozer by city council, which authorizes Park and Recreation to spend $12,500 to buy the land and develop it into a park.

1935: About 200 Vindicator carriers go by special train from Youngstown to Pittsburgh, where they see the Pittsburgh Pirates play the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Youngstown leaders cheer news that work will begin on the Beaver-Mahoning canal as a “life saver” for the Youngstown district steel industry.
