Jim Pasquine named PAC baseball player of year

WASHINGTON, Pa.

Senior outfielder-pitcher Jim Pasquine, a graduate of Poland High, has been named player of the year for the second consecutive season in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Pasquine, playing for Washington & Jefferson, earned his third consecutive first-team All-PAC honor.

Pasquine batted .455 (65-of-143) in 39 games this season. He also led the team with a .748 slugging percentage, hitting 12 doubles, eight home runs and three triples.

He had 57 RBIs, scored scored 54 runs and stole a team-high 20 bases.

Pasquine was named the PAC hitter of the week on May 10th.

On the mound, Pasquine was hampered by an arm injury for much of the season, but earned two key wins over the final week of the season and finished the year with a 3-0 record and 5.26 ERA.

Pasquine holds a number of school records, could be the first player in W&J history to finish with a career batting average over .400.

He’s currently at .431 (218-of-506) heading into NCAA tourna,ent play.

Westminster softball

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association named Westminster’s Katie Hughes and Lis Schulz to its Division III All-Region team.

Hughes, a freshman designated hitter from Cardinal Mooney, was named second team and Schulz, a junior third baseman and pitcher from Gibsonia, Pa., was named third team.

Hughes batted .379 (36-95), second-best on the team and seventh in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference while starting 38. She hit five doubles, one triple and three home runs to go with 28 RBIs. Her team-high .465 on-base percentage ranked fourth in the conference and she also drew a team-high 17 walks.

Westminster baseball

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.

New Castle natives Dan Argiro and Steve Perrotta were named to the All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference second team.

Argiro, a senior catcher, led the Titans with a .375 batting average (48 for 128) and five home runs, and he tied Perrotta for the team lead with 28 RBIs.

Perrotta, a sophomore shortstop, batted .314 (38-121) and led the team with 12 doubles, 34 runs and a .437 on-base percentage.

ASHLAND BASEBALL

Beloit

West Branch High senior baseball player Mickey Manser will continue his career at Ashland University.

Manser, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound catcher, is batting .425 with five home runs and 25 RBIs.

As a junior he batted .462 with three homers and 39 RBIs.

He is a two-time All-Northeastern Buckeye Conference selection and also lettered four years in golf.

He plans to major in Sport Management. He is the son of Mick and Ann Manser.
