Third Ward city Councilman Joseph Mazzocca submitted a letter of resignation to the council at its meeting Wednesday.

Mazzocca, who has been on council for 15 years, is retiring effective June 1 because of health reasons, he said.

“The people of the Third Ward, they were great,” he said. “And I want to say thank you to them.”

Mazzocca said in his letter that his son, Joseph G. Mazzocca Jr., should be considered to finish his term.

Overcome at times by emotion, Mazzocca said his good-byes and thanked council members and administrators. “All of you became like family,” he said.

Council President William Vansuch said that anyone who is interested in filling Mazzocca’s seat should submit a resume to council Clerk Dina Hamilton by Tuesday morning. Council has 30 days to choose a replacement. If it fails to do so, the mayor would make the appointment.
