Political criticism

YOUNGSTOWN

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, criticized the Republican nominees for U.S. Senate and governor, Rob Portman and John Kasich, respectively, for their trade records.

Ex-U.S. Reps. “Kasich and Portman’s failed trade policies threaten our security and economic future,” Ryan said Monday. “It is outrageous that Kasich and Portman are running to restore the abysmal trade agenda that exported thousands of good jobs out of Ohio. We have come too far to put Kasich and Portman back in office just to send the Valley back to their disastrous status quo.”

In response, Rob Nichols, Kasich’s spokesman, said, “The ability for Ohio companies to sell their products overseas has been a boost to our economy.” Also, Jessica Towhey, Portman’s spokeswoman, said the stimulus package, approved by a Democratic Congress, cost Ohio nearly 200,000 jobs in just the last year.

Trial resumes today

WARREN

Jury selection resumes this morning in the trial of Eugene Henderson, Warren, charged with two counts of aggravated murder. Henderson, 25, is accused in the shooting deaths of Lloyd McCoy, 11, and Marvin Chaney, 26, in April 2009.

Police say Henderson fired a high-powered rifle several dozen times into a Wick Street Southeast home in an act of revenge against Chaney for stealing $3,000 from him. The child, who was inside the home, was struck by the bullets and died several days later.

Another Warren man who was with Henderson, Eugene Cumberbatch, has been convicted and sentenced to 38 years to life in prison. Henderson faces a life sentence if he is convicted.
