Mahoning County commissioners are expected to vote today on a resolution to extend the employment contract of Administrator George J. Tablack for one year. Terms of the proposed extension were not available Monday. The extension is on the agenda for the 10 a.m. meeting in the county courthouse basement. Under his four-year contract that expired Saturday, Tablack earned $103,809, minus a 10-percent pay cut through an unpaid day off every two weeks; and he was entitled to six weeks of annual vacation. The expired contract was approved in 2006, with Commissioners Anthony T. Traficanti and David N. Ludt in favor, and Commissioner John A. McNally IV opposed.

Tougher road rules

If you’re caught by police riding a snowmobile, all-terrain vehicle or off-highway motorcycle on city streets, highways and/or public property, you could lose it. The city toughened its laws on the use of these vehicles because they’ve become the source of numerous complaints by residents, Police Chief Jimmy Hughes said.

City council recently approved legislation making violation of this city law a first-degree misdemeanor. Those convicted could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Also, the legislation permits the city to take the vehicle and not return it to its owner. It had been a third-degree misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. Hughes said police will strictly enforce the new ordinance with no exceptions.
