AMERICAN LEAGUE

Yankees 11, Red Sox 9

NEW YORK

Alex Rodriguez hit a tying homer off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning and Marcus Thames connected moments later for a two-run shot of his own, giving the New York Yankees a wild victory. With one out and a runner on third, Rodriguez hit the first pitch into the visitors’ bullpen in left-center to tie it at 9. Papelbon (1-3) got Robinson Cano to fly out but hit Francisco Cervelli with a pitch before Thames drove his next delivery over the wall in left.Javier Vazquez (2-4) got a most unlikely win, striking out Kevin Youkilis with runners on the corners for the final out of the ninth.

Twins 8, Blue Jays 3

TORONTO

Justin Morneau homered twice and Delmon Young also went deep for Minnesota. Morneau went 3 for 4 with a walk and four RBIs. He hit a solo homer off Rommie Lewis in the sixth inning and added a two-run drive off Shawn Camp in the eighth, his first multihomer game this season and the 13th of his career. Morneau also homered Sunday at Yankee Stadium and has hit safely in 10 straight games.

Royals 4, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE

Kyle Davies allowed two runs in six innings, and the Royals defeated the Orioles for their third win in four games under new manager Ned Yost. A crowd of 9,299 — second-smallest in the 19-year history of Camden Yards — turned out on a wet, chilly night to watch the teams with the two worst records in the AL. The all-time low attendance at the stadium was 9,129, last month for a game against Tampa Bay. Davies (3-2) gave up seven hits and a walk to earn his first win in four starts since April 26. The right-hander yielded two singles in each of his first three innings, then retired nine of the final 11 batters he faced.

Rangers 4, Angels 3

ARLINGTON, Texas

Derek Holland pitched into the sixth inning while Nelson Cruz drove in two runs for the Rangers.

Reds 6, Brewers 3

CINCINNATI

Jonny Gomes’ three-run homer completed a five-run rally in the seventh inning, and the Reds made sure they’d stay in first place for yet another day by beating the Brewers. Gomes’ homer off Todd Coffey (1-1) sent the Reds to their eighth victory in nine games.

Diamondbacks 5, Marlins 1

MIAMI

Edwin Jackson struck out a career-high 12 in eight shutout innings to lead the Diamondbacks to a victory over the Marlins. Stephen Drew, John Hester, and Conor Jackson each drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who won for just the second time in 10 games.

Cardinals 6, Nationals 2

ST. LOUIS

Albert Pujols had three hits and a walk and helped fuel a four-run first inning from the cleanup slot in the Cardinals’ victory.
