YOUNGSTOWN

Some 600 Youngstown city school students were recognized for their scholarly success at the 2010 Community Academic Achievement Olympiad.

It was the third annual event and was at the Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University.

This year, students enrolled at Youngstown Early College and the Harding, Kirkmere and Martin Luther King elementary schools were honored. They were presented with medallions signifying their academic success.

The program is sponsored by the city school district and FAMILY Empowerment Student Achievement Institute, a local nonprofit group created to make a positive impact on the city education scene by conducting programs honoring student success, best-practice teachers and best-practice parents.

More than 2,000 students have been recognized at an Olympiad event.

The goal is to show support for the effort of school children who are doing the right thing and working to succeed.

The program also serves to improve the perceived community attitude that Youngstown can’t improve its state-rated academic- emergency ranking, according to the institute and school district.
