Pa. woman gets life for baby-cut-from-womb killing

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh-area woman will spend life in prison for killing a pregnant teen she lured to her apartment, drugging the teen and cutting the child from the womb before trying to pass off the baby as her own.

Andrea Curry-Demus, 40, was sentenced today. An Allegheny County judge found the Wilkinsburg woman guilty but mentally ill of second-degree murder in March. That carries the mandatory life sentence imposed formally today. The judge also tacked on 20 years for kidnapping.

At her sentencing, Curry-Demus briefly turned around and apologized to the family of 18-year-old Kia Johnson of McKeesport.

Curry-Demus had been telling her family she was pregnant and killed Johnson and took her baby in an effort to continue the ruse in July 2008.
