New Castle hosts historic-preservation seminar

Staff report

NEW CASTLE, pa.

A free historic-preservation workshop will be at 7 p.m. today at the Lawrence County Historical Society Annex, 408 N. Jefferson St.

New Castle has the third-largest historic district in Pennsylvania. The North Hill Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The city of New Castle has adopted an ordinance that follows the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

The workshop is open to property owners, business owners and real-estate agents. Those living outside the historic district also are invited to attend.

Bill Callahan, the Western Pennsylvania community-preservation coordinator from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, will present a slide presentation on preservation and economic development.

There will be information on the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, Preservation Tax Credit Information, free paint-color consultation, energy-efficiency information on original windows, a map of North Hill and allied websites.

Property owners will be able to research their house or building from a survey completed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1987, which lists the approximate year the house or building was built, the style of architecture and the grade it was given for architectural integrity.

The event is hosted by the New Castle Historical Architectural Review Board and the Lawrence County Historical Society. The New Castle Historical Architectural Review Board is a newly formed advisory board of the city.
