In his book “My Lunch with Shostakovich: Essays from the Serendipitous World of a Nuclear Scientist,”Jack M. Hollander, professor emeritus of energy and resources at the University of California, Berkeley, devotes several pages to the rise and fall of Youngstown as a major manufacturing center and a full chapter to Rabbi Morris Gordon, who was influential for a number of years at Anshe Emeth.

He also recounts his growing up in the Great Depression years, describes his encounters with notable world figures, and provides insightful critiques of contemporary scientific, environmental and social issues.

Author Mary Robison wins Rea Award

NEW YORK

Author Mary Robison has received The Rea Award for the Short Story. The 61-year-old Robison, known for her precise prose and dark humor, is the author of “Days,” “Believe Them” and two other collections.

The Rea Award is given for making a “significant contribution to the discipline of the short story form.” Founded in 1986 by short-story devotee and fiction writer Michael M. Rea, it carries a $30,000 prize.
