Public services to be offered at historic preservation workshop in New Castle

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

A historic preservation workshop at 7 p.m. Monday at the Lawrence County Historical Society Annex will feature Bill Callahan, Western Pennsylvania community preservation coordinator from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

He will present a slide presentation on preservation and economic development at the event at 408 N. Jefferson St.

Available at the workshop will be:

The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, and Guidelines

Preservation Tax Credit information.

Free Paint Color Consultation Program

Energy-efficiency information regarding original windows

Historic District Map of North Hill and the downtown overlay.

Also, property owners will be able to research their house or building from a survey list completed by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission in 1987, which lists the approximate year the house or building was built, the style of architecture, and the grade it was given for architectural integrity.

Those planning to paint their house or building this summer or in the future can sign up for free paint color consultation. Historic paint color is not mandatory but, highly recommended.

Photographs of restored homes and buildings will be on view along with restoration books.

The event is hosted by the New Castle Historical Architectural Review Board and the Lawrence County Historical Society. The New Castle Historical rchitectural Review Board is a newly formed advisory board of the city of New Castle and will be available for questions at the workshop.

New Castle has the 3rd largest historic district in Pennsylvania.

The workshop is being held free to the public to inform the property owners, business owners, and real estate agents of the new ordinance and of the enefits of preservation. Those living outside the historic district are also invited to attend.
