Sankovich, Fredericka head to district tennis

Canfield’s Ryan Sankovich has the No. 2 seed for the Division I boys tennis district tournament.

In Saturday’s sectional action, Sankovich defeated David Kozy of Green High in the semifinal that determines seeding for the district matches. Sankovich won by the socres of 6-2 and 7-5.

In the final, Sankovich was defeated by Roos Whitater from Lake Union High who has the top seed. Whitaker won by scores of 6-2, 6-0.

Also advancing to the district is the Howland doubles team of Faisal Mangaljii and Matt Madgar.

In the semifinal round, the Tigers’ duo lost to the team of Chris Albertson and Brandon Schilling of Hoover by a score of 6-2 and 6-4. Hoover defeated the No. 1 seed Jackson team Thursday.

The Howland team also was defeated in the consolation round by the team of Nathan Kanam and Will Eisenberg of Jackson. The scores were 6-1 and 6-3.

In the Youngstown section for Division II, Michael Fredericka of Warren JFK earned a No. 1 seed by winning his two matches Saturday at Boardman.

Fredericka won his first singles match against Liberty’s Anuj Kwatra by a score of 6-1 and 6-1.

Fredericka then defeated Poland’s Ben Brocker 6-3 and 6-2 to earn the top spot. Mitch Maroscher of United defeated Kwatra in the consolation match.

The Salem duo of Taylor Fredrickson and Jay Linam earned the top seed in the doubles match, defeating teams from Mooney and Lakeview.

The tandem of Fredrickson and Linam defeated the teams of Mark Pelini and Mike Rotar (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Matt McDivitt and Zach McDivitt (6-4, 7-5).
