Authorities say a man fell to his death around 7 p.m. Friday while trying to rescue a teenager who had fallen off the rim of a waterfall in McConnells Mill State Park.

State police in New Castle say two teenage girls were near Kildoo Falls when a 17-year-old slipped and fell into the water. Her 16-year-old friend alerted several men on motorcycles who were nearby.

Police say 47-year-old Donald Spillane of Cranberry Township tried to climb down to reach the girl but slipped and fell about 20 feet onto rocks below.

Rescue crews tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rescuers eventually rescued the girl, who was flown to UPMC Presbyterian. Officials said she was expected to survive.

New charter school

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio Council of Community Schools, a sponsor of charter schools, has notified the Ohio Department of Education that it intends to sponsor South Side Academy, a new charter school to be located at 1833 Market St., the home of Eagle Heights Academy.

ODE has ordered Eagle Heights closed as of June 30 because of poor academic performance.

The new school will serve the same K-8 student demographic served by Eagle Heights.

An ODE spokesman said the state has been informed that the OCCS and South Side Academy’s governing board have signed a charter contract. That document must now be submitted to the state for review.

The new school seeks to open this fall.
