Like golf and summer? Check the Vindy this week

Finally, May is starting to feel more like May and less like March.

Last week’s cold is fading, and the warmth restores the feeling that summer is near.

This week’s Vindicator has two important summer-fun content bits that you should plan on getting into your hands.

On Tuesday, we launch a new feature that we’re giddy about, called “18 Greatest Golf Holes of the Valley.” It has a companion event in September called “Greatest Golfer of the Valley.”

And on Thursday, we have our annual eight-page summer-fun guide that appears inside the Vibe entertainment section.

Tuesday Golf

I like golf.

More importantly, the golfing nation likes Mahoning Valley golf. We have a lot to offer in the way of links, and folks around the nation have taken notice in various ways.

To salute this, The Vindicator and a few partners created a top-notch golfing opportunity for the five-county region. We’re joined by Farmers National Bank, The Lake Club, Mill Creek Golf Course and Trumbull Country Club in launching two awesome golf ventures.

First is the “18 Greatest Golf Holes of the Valley.”

This is a trek through all five counties of the Valley to find 18 top golf holes. There are more than 18, to be sure. In fact, our initial survey was a 70-hole list. We whittled it down to 18 that we’ll showcase every Tuesday — starting this Tuesday.

One neat feature of the “18 Greatest” is that you get to go online to agree or disagree with our choices. We have a stellar golf steward to lead that chatter: Jonah Karzmer of Boardman, Kent and Youngstown scholastic golf fame and now of the Youngstown Golf Association.

When the 18 holes wrap in September, we launch our “Greatest Golfer of the Valley” amateur tournament.

For a $100 entry fee, you will play Mill Creek and Trumbull and have a chance to play The Lake Club.

This is a chance to compete for prizes and prestige and to do it across seven divisions: scratch, 6-12 handicap, 13-17 handicap, 18+ handicap, women, seniors and super seniors.

Thursday events

Summer is synonymous with fun. Inside our office, we refer to it simply as “go and do.”

But it’s so, so busy. To help in that regard, we publish an annual summer-events guide. This Thursday, you will find it inside the Vibe entertainment section.

It’s filled with events, times, places, concerts, festivals, food fun, 5Ks and more.

One cool handling point of this is that we place it in the middle of the Vibe section so you can pull the pages out as a small mini-section.

So grab it, tuck it in the car, and reach for it all summer long.
