JLY observes 80 years of community service

The Junior League of Youngstown celebrated its 80th anniversary May 11 during a dinner and meeting at Tippecanoe Country Club. President Michele Grant of Boardman presided and spoke of the organization’s plans for the future.

Honored at the event was Frances Lynn Into of Youngstown who has attained emeritus status. To attain the status, a member must have reached the age of 80 or completed 50 years of membership in the JLY.

Also singled out for recognition were 10 past presidents including: Lynee Aiad-Toss of Poland (2007-08); Patricia Green of Hubbard (2005-06) ; Suzyn Schwebel Epstein of Hubbard (2004-05); Janice Tattrie Fagert of Youngstown (2000-01); Tracy Prizant of Poland (1999-2000); Kathy Myers of McDonald (1997-98); Karen Wilson of Poland (1987-89); Suzanne Fleming of Youngstown (1983-85); Betsy Slagle of Canfield (1979-81); and Nancy Morris of Youngstown (1965-67).

Since its inception, the league has trained volunteers for service in the Mahoning Valley and has been involved in such community projects as Daybreak Runaway Shelter, Ronald McDonald House, Woman-to-Woman, Volunteer Service to Seniors, Summer Adventures in Learning, Leadership Mahoning Valley, Silent Witness, Hope House and the Children’s Museum of the Valley.

The most recent League project was Kids in the Kitchen, initiated by the incoming JLY Provisional class. The Kids in the Kitchen Health Fair in April at Fit Woman in Austintown served more than 80 children and 200 adults.

Entertainment was provided by vocalists Brian Palumbo and Rachell Joy of the Lost Then Found Ministries.
