Tod cemetery
The will of George Tod, a prominent area businessman, left endowment and land off Belmont Avenue for a cemetery to be built on a portion of the family farm, known as Brier Hill Farm, which was the site of a two-hour historical tour Saturday. A brief look at the cemetery’s history:
1909: Tod Homestead Cemetery Association elected its first trustees, including Atty. Volney Rogers, who was named executive committee chairman.
1914: Remains of George Tod, who died in 1908, are moved from Oak Hill Cemetery on Youngstown’s South Side to Tod Homestead.
November 1919: An office and chapel are completed.
Prominent people buried there include members of the Tod, Stambaugh, Pettiford and Armstrong families, as well as Rogers and Julius A. Schweinfurth, an architect from Auburn, N.Y., who completed the entrance gates, office and chapel for the cemetery in 1919. He also designed in Mill Creek Park the Slippery Rock Pavilion and Parapet Bridge, finished in 1910 and 1912, respectively.
