Jury to be chosen Monday in double-homicide trial

Staff report

WARREN

Jury selection begins Monday morning in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court for the trial of Eugene Henderson, the man police say fired dozens of bullets into a house on Wick Street Southeast, killing Lloyd McCoy Jr., 11, and Marvin Chaney, 26

Henderson, 25, of Pearl Street Southwest, is charged with two counts of aggravated murder and other charges in the April 13, 2009, shooting. He could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted.

Eugene Cumberbatch, 27, of Front Street Southwest, was convicted earlier for his role in the deaths and received a life prison sentence with eligibility for parole after 38 years.

A third man police say was involved in the shootings, Marcus Yager, 22, of Vine Avenue Northeast, testified that Cumberbatch fired a handgun once from the street at a house containing Lloyd and Chaney, two of Lloyd’s sisters, and his niece and nephew.

The nephew also was hit by a bullet but recovered.

Yager said Henderson fired an AK-47 rifle at the house dozens of times. Yager is hoping to get one year in prison after Henderson’s trial is over.

Police said Henderson, Cumberbatch and Yager went to the house on Wick Street to kill Chaney because Chaney had stolen $3,000 from Henderson.

Lloyd was a student at the Willard K-8 school in Warren.

Prosecuting the case before Judge John M. Stuard is Chris Becker, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor. Henderson’s attorney is John Fowler.
