Former NFL defensive tackle Hand dies
WALTERBORO, S.C.
Former NFL defensive tackle Norman Hand has died after collapsing at his home in South Carolina.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said the 37-year-old Hand collapsed at his home in Walterboro, S.C., about 11 a.m. Friday and died about 90 minutes later at a local hospital.
The cause of death has not been determined. The coroner said an autopsy is planned today. He said Hand’s family was with him when he died.
Hand’s 10-year NFL career included playing stints with the Dolphins, Saints, Chargers, Seahawks and Giants. Hand, who had 221/2 career sacks, was drafted by the Dolphins in 1995.
Daveron wins US debut at Belmont Park
NEW YORK
Daveron was a decisive winner in her U.S. debut, beating Talike Me by four lengths Friday in the $55,000 allowance feature for fillies and mares on the turf at Belmont Park.
A 5-year-old bred in Germany, Daveron compiled a record of 2-2-1 in seven races in Europe. She readily adapted to her new surroundings, and a shift to trainer Christophe Clement’s barn.
Eddie Castro was aboard as she ran the 1 1-16 miles in 1:41.01 on the firm course.
Daveron paid $7.60, $4.70 and $2.50. Talike Me returned $9.10 and $5.20. Granted Tiger, the 3-2 favorite, paid $2.20 to show.
Student impostor now faces sex charge
ODESSA, Texas
Authorities say a 22-year-old man accused of posing as a high school student in Texas is now facing a sexual assault charge.
Police in Odessa, Texas, say Guerdwich Montimer turned himself in Friday after a 16-year-old girl reported that she had a sexual relationship with him last summer when she thought he was 15-year-old Jerry Joseph.
Montimer was originally arrested Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of failure to identify himself to a police officer. Officials say he posed as a sophomore and helped lead Permian High School to the state basketball playoffs.
Suspicions were raised after coaches from Florida said they recognized Joseph as Montimer, a 2007 graduate of a Florida high school.
Powell wins 100 at Diamond League meet
DOHA, Qatar
Jamaican Asafa Powell has recovered from a poor start to win the 100 meters in a wind-aided 9.81 seconds at the inaugural Diamond League meet in Doha.
Powell was slow out of the blocks Friday and stepped out of his lane three times before blowing past the field near the end.
Fellow Jamaican Nesta Carter was 0.07 seconds back in second, while last year’s Doha winner Travis Padgett of the United States was third.
Olympic and world champion Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay of the United States skipped the meet.
Earlier, American runners Lolo Jones and Bershawn Jackson won their hurdles events.
Lloyd wins 6th stage of Giro d’Italia race
MARINA DI CARRARA, Italy
Australian rider Matthew Lloyd held on after an early breakaway to win the sixth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Friday, and Vincenzo Nibali kept the overall lead.
Lloyd finished the 106-mile course in 4 hours, 24 minutes, 14 seconds for his first stage win in a Grand Tour. He also earned 13 mountain points to take the green jersey as the best climber.
Nibali is 13 seconds ahead of fellow Italian Ivan Basso in the overall standings.
Blatter says Cameron called to back England
ZURICH
New British Prime Minister David Cameron has telephoned FIFA president Sepp Blatter to back England’s bid to host the World Cup.
Blatter said Friday that Cameron, who took office this week, “expressed his determination to be behind this bid.”
England is one of nine candidates to host either 2018 or 2022. All presented their technical bid books to FIFA on Friday.
