Youngstown State head football coach Eric Wolford spoke to members the Austintown Lions Club Monday at Austintown Community Church.
Wolford said he is not only trying to recruit good football players, but young men that understand that football is more than just a sport; it’s a way of life.
“My job is player development,” he said. “It’s so much more than just football that we are dealing with.”
Wolford wants the players to value their education just as much as they value their position on the team. Punctuality, playing by the rules, looking people in the eye and just doing the right thing were among the several attributes Wolford wants his players to possess.
He said he is a firm, but fair coach. If the players are doing something incorrectly, he will let them know.
“I coach the old-fashioned way,” he said. “I won’t put my hands on the boys, but if they do something wrong, they will hear about it.”
Following his presentation, Wolford was given a certificate of appreciation from the club thanking him for his time.
The Lions Club will install its new officers June 21 and will resume normal club activities in August. For information, contact membership chairman Bob Whited at 330-792-7909.
