Sankovic advances in Division I tennis

CANTON

Ryan Sankovic of Canfield has qualified for the Division I district tennis tournament.

Sankovic, along with the Howland doubles team of Matt Madgar and Faisal Mangalji, completed preliminary rounds in the sectional tournament on Thursday.

Sankovic won three matches, losing only two games in the process, and will play David Kozy of Green in a semifinal on Saturday.

Madgar and Mangalji won two matches, defeating Ike Mann and Zach Hofacre of Canton McKinley, 6-3, 6-3, in a quarterfinal.

The Howland duo will take on Chris Albertson and Brandon Schillig of North Canton Hoover in a semifinal on Saturday.

DIVISION II

BOARDMAN — Liberty’s Anuj Kwatra upset No. 4 seed Luke Spahija of Cardinal Mooney, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Kwatra will next play top seed Michael Fredricka of Warren JFK.

Also on Thursday, United’s Mitch Maroscher, the No. 3 seed, defeated Kenny Duncan of Poland, 6-2, 6-3, and will face No. 2 seed Ben Brocker of Poland on Saturday.
