Mahoning County commissioners hired a Columbus law firm for $60,000 to help the county with negotiations with its sheriff’s department employees belonging to Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 141 and Department of Job and Family Services workers belonging to American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2001.
The professional-service agreement is with Downes Fishel Hass Kim LLC. Thursday’s vote was 2-1, with Commissioner John A. McNally IV dissenting. He said he wants the county to study proposals from other firms providing the same services.
15-year sentences
PITTSBURGH
U.S. District Judge Nora Barry Fischer sentenced two Farrell men to 15 years in prison each Thursday for their convictions of violating federal narcotics and firearms laws.
Robert S. Cessar, acting U.S. attorney, said Robert L. Pegues III, 21, of Fruit Avenue, and Terrance H. Wells, 23, of Market Avenue, will be on five years’ supervised release after serving their prison time.
According to information presented to the court, Pegues and Wells earlier this year conspired to distribute, and possessed with intent to distribute, 50 grams or more of crack cocaine, and were carrying firearms at the time.
The FBI, Pennsylvania State Police, Sharon Police Department and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Unit were involved in the prosecution of both men.

Beaver School District is accepting student registration for kindergarten classes this fall.
Registration packets may be picked up at the elementary school that a child will attend, based on residence. Students must be age 5 before Aug. 1 to enroll.
The district conducts an early-impact program annually requiring the participation of the child and parent. The dates for the program are tentatively set for May 24-26. Appointments will be scheduled when completed registration packets are returned to the school.
Scholarship dinner

The Taylor Lee Veisz Memorial Scholarship Fund’s sixth annual spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction will run from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 122 S. State St. ( U.S. Route 422).
Tickets, at $8 for adults and $5 for children, will be available at the door. Carry-out is available.
Anyone wishing to make a donation to the fund can send a check made payable to the fund in care of Sherron Jackson, 921 Birch Hill Drive, Youngstown 44509. The fund provides assistance to young women and men pursuing a career in the fine and performing arts.

A vehicle struck a U.S. Route 224 sandwich shop Thursday afternoon. The accident at the Subway on Route 224 at Glenwood Avenue occurred about 12:45 p.m. No injuries were reported.
166,704 pounds of food
YOUNGSTOWN
The National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 385, 2959 Canfield Road No. 11, collected 166,704 pounds of food during the 2010 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. All food will stay in the community in which it was collected.
Struthers store robbed

Police are investigating an aggravated robbery at the Circle K on Maplewood Avenue.
Two men walked into the store at 1:53 a.m. Thursday, police reported. Their faces were covered.
One of the men threatened the clerk with a knife. They got away with cash and two cartons of cigarettes, police said.
