The Great State of Ohio was on the minds of fourth-graders at Hilltop Elementary School May 6 as they filed into the gym to present “The Buckeye Trivia Show” to a packed house of family and friends.
The evening consisted of art and music, inspired by the state.
The event showcased the efforts of the students in visual and performing arts. It also connected visual art and performing arts with fourth-grade social studies.
The students’ artwork was on display in the hallways before and after the show and represented specific connections with Ohio heritage. Students made stick puppets to represent famous Ohioans; pottery to represent the evolution of the Ohio pottery industry; Pop Art juice can pieces inspired by the state beverage, tomato juice; and metal tiles representing the arts and crafts movement in Ohio.
Paper dolls represented the coming of book publishing and paper doll manufacturing to Ohio. They also made self portraits.
The students presented “The Buckeye Trivia Show,” a program to honor America and to celebrate Ohio history through music and drama. The show included singing, dancing, playing recorders and Ohio history. Musical selections included “The Star Spangled Banner,” “Fifty-Nifty United States,” “Down the River, Follow the Drinking Gourd,” “Ohio is My Home,” “Hang on Sloopy,” “This Land is Your Land” and “Beautiful Ohio.”
“The Buckeye Trivia Show” operated like a television game show with three contestants answering questions on the subject of Ohio’s history. The production had students playing the roles of emcees, contestants, a stage manager, a scorekeeper, a camera man and an applause sign holder.
Several students also had speaking roles and dance roles.
A design team of students provided original artwork for the evening’s programs and promotional posters. To tie the entire evening together, the students wore T-shirts featuring fourth-grader Sareena Sethi’s original design in “Ohio red.”
