Fitch, Howland advance in Div. I softball

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown Fitch rallied for all of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Ashtabula Lakeside, 5-0, in a Division I softball sectional tournament game on Thursday.

Six of the Falcons’ (13-8) eight hits came in the sixth inning. Alyssa Jones hit a RBI double for Fitch, while Carly Ortz, Amanda Callahan and Alana Callahan had run-scoring singles. Brianna Burko also had a RBI.

Callahan was the winning pitcher for Fitch, which plays at Canfield today at 5:15 p.m.

HOWLAND 11, Harding 1

HOWLAND

Tori McCormick had three hits and two RBIs to lead Howland (11-13) into a sectional final against Boardman today at 4:30 p.m.

Erika Notes, Olivia Nicholas and Jonelle Gerke all singled twice,with Nicholas and Gerke driving in two runs apiece.

Carla Cope hit a triple and drove in two runs. Hayley Marchio and Tiffany McCormick combined on a two-hitter.

Division II Hubbard 5, Salem 1

HUBBARD

Four hits, one of which was a solo home run by Devan Zelonish, powered the Eagles (13-10), who were also aided by three doubles.

Seniors Chelsea Callow and Ashley Dudley and sophomore Brianna Kelly had a double apiece for Hubbard, which plays at Poland today at 4:30 p.m.

Haley Thirion (7-5) pitched the five-hitter.

Sarah Seddon had a double and single, while Chrissy McDevitt, Rachael Winn and Mary McKinney had a single apiece for Salem.

DIVISION III Ursuline 6, Liberty 1

LIBERTY

In the eighth inning, singles by Sarah Ingalls, Kasey Foley, Kelli Kolenich and Anna Donko ignited a five-run inning in the sectional final. Winning pitcher Casey Lower (20-3) struck out seven and walked none for the Irish (20-4). Sarah Ingalls had four hits and Malikka Caige three. For the Leopards (7-13), Breanna Comer doubled and scored on Julie Mikulich’s single.

Division IV Columbiana 3, Crestview 1

COLUMBIANA

Freshman Dakota DeAmicis (13-10) struck out seven during a four-hitter for Columbiana (15-10).

Junior Jordan Stoddard had a double and single, sophomore Katie Libb had a two-run double and sophomore Meredith Tirpak had an RBI single for the Clippers.

Malory Taylor had an RBI single, while Aaryn Kordecki, Logan Rance and Kassidy Arkwright had a single apiece for Crestview.

Today at 4:30, Columbiana plays Southern Local.

Southern 10, Wellsville 9

SALINEVILLE

Chrissy Speedy led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and the junior was headed toward third base when the freshman Katie Hipley’s bunt was fielded and thrown wildly, allowing Speedy to score to end the game.

Senior Marla Pitts had two doubles and three RBIs, while sophomore Maddie Dowling had a triple and single for Southern (8-19), which plays at Columbiana today at 4:30.

Brittany Thomas had two doubles and a single, while Rachel Vallero had a single and four RBIs for Wellsville.

REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION 5, MOONEY 4

BOARDMAN

Tawny Rogers and Haley McCalister hit home runs to help Champion (24-0) remain unbeaten. Lindsey Swipas struck out five for the Flashes.

Jamie Clausen hit a three-run homer and a double for Mooney (22-6), while Christian Hrehor had two doubles and a RBI. Marissa Grovet and Macy Ucchino had two hits each for the Cardinals.
