Detached trailer strikes, kills Pittsburgh artist

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Police in Pittsburgh say a trailer came loose from a passing pickup truck and struck an artist who was carving a wooden sculpture.

Authorities say 46-year-old John Metzler was using a chain saw and wearing heavy ear protection when the small trailer broke free from the passing truck.

Police say the truck hit a divot in the road and the trailer detached, hitting Metzler as he carved the sculpture Thursday night at his studio in the East Liberty neighborhood.

Metzler was pinned against a building and later died of his injuries at a hospital.

Investigators are trying to determine if the trailer was properly attached to the truck.
