Boardman bands ride wave of success in Myrtle Beach


The Boardman High School orchestras were awarded top honors at the Fiesta-Val National Music Competition held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. April 23.

Participating groups from Boardman included the symphony orchestra, classical orchestra and chamber orchestra.

Bands, choirs, jazz ensembles and orchestras from 10 states and Canada participated in the festival.

The Boardman Classical Orchestra received an “Excellent” rating and a third-place trophy in Division 4. The Chamber Orchestra received a “Superior” rating and was awarded a second-place trophy in Division 6.

The Symphony Orchestra also received a “Superior” rating and captured first place in Division 5.

In addition, the judges awarded special “Adjudicator Recognition” trophies to soloists Anthony Borzi (cello) and the Boardman Orchestra Cello Section for being the outstanding string section of the entire competition.

While in the Myrtle Beach area, members of the Boardman orchestras visited the Broadway on the Beach and attended a “Cirque” circus presentation.

The high school orchestras will perform Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the BPAC auditorium. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for students and senior citizens and preschoolers are admitted free of charge.

Funds for travel and competition were provided by the families of orchestra members, the Boardman Band and Orchestra Parents Association, and support from the Boardman community.
