U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire recently joined with local health-care providers, patients and community leaders to celebrate the grand opening of Primary Health Network’s newly expanded New Castle Dental Center, 2807 Wilmington Road, which was partially paid for with $238,700 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.
Minibikes for youths

A grant from the Kennedy Family Foundation, a component fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, is helping YWCA Warren incorporate NYPUM (National Youth Program Using Minibikes) into its list of services.
The mission of NYPUM is to provide at-risk youth a recreational, incentive-based opportunity to develop self-esteem, strong values and a sense of responsibility using minibikes as a motivational tool.
Humility of Mary receives grant

Northeast Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has awarded a $33,891 grant to Humility of Mary Health Partners to increase screening and provide breast-health outreach and education to at-risk women in black, Hispanic and low-income communities.
Cargill donates funds to Second Harvest
YOUNGSTOWN
As part of its Nourishing People challenge, which raised $382,000 for Ohio hunger-relief organizations, Cargill has donated $15,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.
Cargill presented the Nourishing People challenge to its businesses Oct. 16, 2009 (World Hunger Day), asking them to reach out to local hunger-relief organizations to address immediate needs and provide long-term solutions to hunger.
The grant program, which ended March 1, generated $3.3 million in food and money donations worldwide.
UPMC Horizon honors nurses

As part of National Nurses Week, UPMC Horizon recognized 10 nurses during its 12th annual “Excellence in Practice” awards ceremony Monday.
They are: Sally Coates, RN; Cheryl Ferguson, RN; Becky Fry, RN; Debra Godinich, LPN; Matt Maritch, RN; Sue Rinella, RN; Sherri Robinson, RN; Jeanne Schrantz, RN; Amy Thompson, CRNP; Sara Webster-Mull, RN. In addition, Joni Brinker, RN, was named “Rookie of the Year;” and Bo Springer received the first “Friend of Nursing Award.”
The nursing staff also awarded “Heart of Horizon” scholarships to Donna Carl, RN; Melody Capitola, RN; and Tina Laaks, RNC.
Protecting kids on social-networking sites

The Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics is conducting an open forum from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 21 in the Considine Auditorium, 215 W. Bowery St., on the main campus of Akron Children’s Hospital.
The forum is to gather input from mental-health professionals, educators, legislators, social workers, wellness coordinators, nurse practitioners, parents and other concerned adults on the risks of young people using Internet social-networking sites and how to develop strategies to minimize these risks.
The meeting will open with keynote speaker Dr. Peggy Stager, interim chairwoman of the Department of Pediatrics at MetroHealth, speaking on “Today’s Teens and the Secret World of Social Networking.”
The event also offers small and large group discussions. Participation is free, but registration is required.

Raising funds for children’s hospitals

Area Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores recently kicked off their Children’s Miracle Network campaign to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for more than 170 children’s hospitals.
The six-week campaign will run through June 19th. Every dollar that is donated at local Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores will benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.
In addition to selling the signature Children’s Miracle Network balloons upon checkout, each store will have fund-raising events such as bake sales, dress-down days and picnics.
In 2009, local Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores raised nearly $27,000 for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley during the six-week Children’s Miracle Network fund-raising campaign.
Nationally, Walmart Stores Inc. raised $15 million for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.
