Library marks centennial today

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County Historical Society will conduct a program at 6:30 p.m. today at the main public library, 305 Wick Ave., in observance of the centennial of the main library building, which was dedicated Dec. 3, 1910.

The building was designed by prominent architects Owsley and Boucherle; and steel industrialist Andrew Carnegie donated $50,000 toward its $150,000 construction cost. Library Director Carlton Sears, historical society Director H. William Lawson and architect Frank Rulli will conduct the program covering the history and architecture of the building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Brockway resigns

MINERAL RIDGE

Weathersfield Township trustees have accepted the resignation of Atty. Melodie Brockway from the township zoning commission. She has moved out of the township after serving on the commission for one year.

FEMA grant

Austintown

The township fire department has been awarded a $450,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Austintown is one of three Ohio fire departments to receive money through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

Assistant Fire Chief Andy Frost III said the money will be used to purchase a new ladder truck. Frost said the truck’s total cost is $500,000, and the township will cover the remaining expense.

The department was able to purchase another new ladder truck in 2009, thanks to a $247,500 firefighters grant.

Safety checks

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct vessel safety checks from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on these dates and at these locations:

Mosquito Lake State Park: Saturday and Sunday.

Berlin Lake Mill Creek Campgrounds: May 29, 30 and 31.

West Branch State Park, east ramp: June 5 and 6.
