Columbiana County officials are moving to launch the summer work program for low income youths.

Eileen Dray-Bardon, director of the county’s Department of Job and Family Services, said Wednesday the program will start June 1 and end Aug. 31.

The cost of the project is $646,911 that should fund 240 jobs for people age 16 through age 24.

The program is being funded with $47 million of state money.

The pay will be a minimum of $7.30 an hour.

“They cannot work more than 30 hours a week,” she added.

Workers can qualify, for example, if they are in a family of four if the household has an income of about $44,000 a year.

The program last year had been run through the Mahoning & Columbiana Training Association. It is not involved this year.

The commissioners approved the project.

Perry Traina, the president of the commissioners, praised Dray-Bardon for quickly creating the programs.

This year, private companies that want to use workers must attend a meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Action Agency, 7880 Lincole Place for information on the program. City, village, and school officials who want to hire youths must attend one of two meetings. The first is at noon Monday and the second is at 6 p.m. Monday, both at Lincole Place. Information packets will be available at the meetings.
