YSU Penguin receives conference honor

Youngstown State baseball player Joe Iacobucci was named the Batter of the Week in the Horizon League.
A graduate of Boardman High, Iacobucci batted .500 with seven RBIs and four runs scored in a three-game series against Cleveland State. He is batting .363 on the year.
Iacobucci also has 37 runs scored, 45 RBIs, 15 doubles and is second on the team with nine home runs. He has also walked 34 times, which is top in the conference.
The Penguins will play the University of Ohio tonight at 6 p.m.

Former Tiger earns All-NCAC mention

Current Hiram College, and former Howland High baseball player Justin Street has been named to the 2010 All-North Coast Athletic Conference Team as an honorable mention pick.
Street earned his second All-NCAC Award this season after earning honorable mention accolades in 2008. This spring, he finished second on the team in batting average at .330, and was third in RBIs (21) and triples (two).
He also was tied for third in both home runs (two) and doubles (eight). In addition, he scored 18 runs.
Benefit spaghetti dinner for athletes
North Jackson
Jackson-Milton high is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner May 23. All proceeds go toward the athletic department and student athletes.
The event is from noon to 4 p.m. and will take place in the cafeteria of the new high school. The cost is $7.50 for adults and $4.00 for students under age 12.
Golf league debuts at Yo. Country Cub

The MyLoop Penn-Ohio golf league opened its 65th year at the course in adverse conditions.
Forty-two of the top golfers in the area players in the inaugural event of the season. Dennis Miller, who represented Beltone Hearing, was the medalist for the event. Miller shot a one-under par round of 70.
MUC player earns conference honors

Mount Union freshman Rachel McAninch earned both the Ohio Athletic Conference John Wells Pitcher of the Year and Robert Jordan Rookie of the Year awards to headline the 2010 All-OAC teams selected by the conference’s 10 head coaches.
In 121.1 innings pitched, McAninch had a conference-best 1.62 ERA and was among OAC leaders with 77 strikeouts. Her 14 wins (14-3 overall) was the most by a Mount Union freshman since All-American Lindsay Royer won 17 in 1995 when she swept both awards.
W&J to host PAC baseball tournament

The Presidents’ Athletic Conference has announced seeds and pairings for the 2010 PAC Baseball Championship Tournament.
The tournament is scheduled for May 13-15, and is hosted by top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pa.
Big Ten denies offers for expansion

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany e-mailed conference officials Tuesday to stamp out a rumor that four schools had already been offered a chance to join the league.
Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith confirmed Tuesday that Delany had quashed a report that the Big Ten had offered expansion spots to Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Rutgers.
The conference is looking at expanding from its current 11 members so that it can extend the reach of its lucrative cable network and add a league championship game in football.
